The Gately Rotary Polio Challenge will take place on the 8th of February at Bucco Astro Park.
Polio is a paralysing and potentially fatal disease Yet total unknown to most South Africans due to the involvement of Rotary International .
In 1985 Rotary International took a momentous decision to tackle polio eradication worldwide through the mass vaccination of children .
Rotary International set an initial goal to raise $120 million and it became the first major fundraising campaign undertaken by Rotarians World Wide for a single project .
By 1987 Rotary had surpassed the goal and raised $ 220 million .
In 1988 , polio was present in 125 nations of the world and there were 350 000 recorded cases of polio each year . To assist Rotary they partnered with the World Health Organisation (WHO ) The United Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the US Centre’s for disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This partnership is called the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) In 2007 Rotary eneted into a further partnership . This time with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation . The foundation issued a $100 million challenge grant to Rotarians to continue to raise funds for Polio . Since then the foundation has given Rotary more than $600 million and in 2013 , the Gates Foundation issued a further 5 year challenge to match Rotary’s contributions .
In 2016 in line with East Londoners love for healthy living Gately Rotary decided to add to our already extended fund raising a Polio Fun Run Challenge .Our first challenge was held at the end of January 2016 and given the success and the fun had by all who participated it was decided to make this an annual event .
The annual Wine Auction of the Gately Rotary Club is a prestige event on the Club’s fundraising calendar and is very well supported by numerous wine estates in the Western Cape.
The auction is held under the leadership of well known wine connoisseur, Michael Fridjon, who acts as the Auctioneer, whilst an enthusiastic East London community participate eagerly in the auction.
It is a tribute to everyone involved that such a large part of our industry and local community has united around this exciting endeavour. The Gately Rotary Trust is mandated to raise money to support a host of beneficiaries.A major new fundraiser with international support is the Early Childhood Development Programme. Through your generosity and support, we will be able to create magic and change the lives of those less fortunate than us.Let’s have a great time and contribute to making a real difference by digging deep.
The date for 2018's wine auction is the 1st of June 2018 at the Regent Hotel. This year includes new features like some "Mystery Lots" and also and "American Style Auction".
